There are a handful of routes into biomimicry in 2026. Free introductions and self-paced courses sit at one end (free to about $550). Live cohorts and mentored programmes sit in the middle (about $350 to $2,800), and university certificates and degrees sit at the far end (from about $5,000 to well over $25,000).
This guide compares every route side by side, picks the best options in each, and links to our detailed guides on biomimicry degrees and master's programmes and biophilic design courses.
Prices and dates checked in October 2026.
This page is the overview. Each of these guides goes into far more detail:
Before you compare prices, ask yourself: "What am I going to get out of this?"
In our experience, learners want one of two things. Either an academically recognised qualification for a specific job, or practical skills that support their career without needing a university award.
Any good course gives you some of both. Knowing which matters more narrows the list quickly. Fitting form to function, as nature does.

This infographic covers the major biomimicry courses, degrees and masters. Note that the prices are logarithmic, and scale exponentially. The Biomimicry Practitioner Programme is our flagship programme, and costs $2799 USD, which includes the Biomimicry Short Course Set (valued at $198 USD).
| Route | Typical cost | Time | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free introductions | Free | 10 minutes to an hour | A solid grounding and a first project idea | The curious, testing whether biomimicry clicks |
| Self-paced short courses | About $160 to $550 | A few hours to a few weeks | Often a certificate of completion | Building foundations around a job |
| Subscriptions | $8 a month or $72 a year | Two short lessons a week | A steady habit of learning from nature | Keeping biomimicry in your week |
| Live and cohort courses | About $350 to $895 | 4 to 8 weeks | Live sessions, feedback and a peer network | People who learn best with others |
| Mentored practitioner programmes | About $2,800 | 6 months, part-time | Mentoring, a real project, an endorsed certificate | Professionals applying biomimicry at work |
| University certificates | About $5,400 to $9,000+ | 3 to 5 courses | Academic credit | People who need credit |
| Master's and PhD | About EUR 2,700 a year to $18,000+ | 15 months to 2+ years; a PhD typically 5 | A degree | Students and career changers |

Some learners arrive at biomimicry through a neighbouring field, or want to go deep in one. Here are the three most common.
Our pick: Learn Biophilic Design | Price: $199 | Format: Self-paced
Biophilic design brings nature into the spaces where people live and work. Our course, Learn Biophilic Design, is aimed at architects, interior designers and working professionals.
Other options range from Living Future's Foundations of Biophilic Design Certificate to bachelor's degrees. Read the full guide to biophilic design courses.
Bioremediation puts plants, fungi and microbes to work on pollution. We do not teach it ourselves.
Earth Activist Training's 6-week live online course (USD 300 to 350, sliding scale, next run 19 January to 23 February 2027) is a good first step.
Biomimicry learns from nature, biodesign builds with it, and bionics is the engineer's route into the same territory.
Look at the UAL Bioinspired Design Online Short Course (about 10.5 hours, self-paced), the MA Biodesign at Central Saint Martins and Hochschule Bremen's bionics degrees.
Every organism fits its form to its function, its context and the resources available. Ask the same of your learning.
1. Function: what do you need this course to do for you? A qualification an employer will ask for points to university certificates and degrees. Leading a project at work points to a mentored programme. Simply curious? Start free.
2. Context: what does your life look like? A full-time master's in the Netherlands suits a graduate who can move. A self-paced or part-time online course suits a working parent.
3. Resources: what can you invest in time and money? A $198 course you finish beats a $9,000 certificate you abandon. Many of our learners start small and (re)visit the bigger options a year later.
There is no industry-wide accreditation body for biomimicry. The only formal designations we know of are Biomimicry 3.8's Biomimicry Specialist and Certified Biomimicry Professional.
Below that, you will find endorsed certificates (such as our Practitioner Programme, endorsed by the Biomimicry Institute), courses that earn CE credits, and credit-bearing university certificates from ASU, MCAD and Akron.
Yes. Biomimicry Commons' Introduction to Biomimicry is free and takes about 30 minutes. The Biomimicry Institute's Toolbox, our free eBook with its 7-day email course, and our Biomimicry Project Playbook are good companions.
No. Most introductory, self-paced and cohort courses, including all of ours, assume no biology background.
Degrees are different: ASU asks for a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA, and Utrecht's MSc is aimed at students with a bachelor's in the biological sciences.
It varies widely. ASU's online MS is about $18,150 base tuition plus fees. Utrecht's MSc is EUR 2,771 a year for EU/EEA students and EUR 26,100 for non-EU students (2027/28 entry). See every biomimicry degree compared. Akron's PhD fellowship is funded through an assistantship.
We are biased, so take this as our view: we built the Biomimicry Short Course Set to be the best place to start, with a certificate for each course, for $198.
If you would rather not spend anything yet, start with Biomimicry Commons' free Introduction to Biomimicry or our free eBook.
Diversity. Networking. Lifelong learning. Biomimicry is a lifelong and life-wide practice, and the more you practise it, the better you will get.
Theory alone will not change the world. It is only through practice that we move towards a world that creates conditions conducive to life.
Use this guide to connect the dots and create your own journey, whether you start with us and go all the way to a Master of Science, or decide a specialist course is your best move. Start where you are, and #thinkoutside.
